COP29 Presidency concludes high level meetings in Washington, D.C.

Meetings continue COP29 Presidency’s “Listening Tour” in advance of COP29 in Baku.

The COP29 leadership team held a successful series of meetings in Washington, D.C., during the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. The team emphasised that climate finance will be a top priority for COP29 and worked with a range of stakeholders on solutions that can be delivered before the conference this November.

COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev was joined by Chief Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev, CEO Elnur Soltanov, and High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai. The team participated in four days of bilateral meetings, group discussions and events.

Commenting on his meetings in Washington D.C., Mr. Babayev said:

“We had a very productive four days in Washington, where we emphasised our top priority for COP29 – climate finance. To meet our climate goals, we need everyone to help us increase the flow of climate finance by several multiples.

We were particularly focused on global financial institutions, as they have a special role to play in keeping 1.5 within reach given their ability to mobilise low-cost financing, and to catalyse higher volumes of private finance. We look forward to continuing these discussions on how we can reform to deliver progress.”

In addition, the COP29 Presidency also hosted a high-level dialogue titled “Enabling Global Action for Climate Finance”. This brought together leaders from the governmental, policy and business communities. The leadership team will continue its engagement tour in New York with meetings at the United Nations.
