COP29 Climate Change Summer Camp Launched Today at ADA University


The COP29 Climate Change Summer Camp for young educators launched today at ADA University in Baku, Azerbaijan, creating a path to climate education for youth. The opening ceremony was moderated by Dr. Fariz Ismayilzade, Vice-Rector of ADA University.

Attendees also included COP29 President-Designate, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 Lead Negotiator, Mr. Yalchin Rafiyev, COP29 High-Level Climate Champion Ms. Nigar Arpadarai, UNDP Resident Representative in Azerbaijan, Ms. Alessandra Roccasalvo, COP29 Youth Climate Champion and NAMYO Chair, Ms. Leyla Hasanova, UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan, Ms. Saja Farrooq Abdullah, and UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Mr. Simon Stiell, who addressed the audience via video message.

With the support and collaboration of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan, UNDP Azerbaijan, UNFCCC, UNICEF Azerbaijan, ADA University, NAMYO, UNESCO, IRENA, FEE, OCE, UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, and Teach For All, the COP29 Climate Change Summer Camp is welcoming 75 young teachers, including 54 international educators, and 21 from Azerbaijan. The camp continues until August 9, 2024. During this time, young and passionate educators will take training and classes on climate change awareness and the COP process to bring back to their home countries and educate youth.

The COP29 mission includes integrating climate change awareness with education - helping young educators to gain relevant knowledge and skills which they can share with the next generation.

COP29 Youth Climate Champion Ms Hasanova prioritises and promotes engagement of youth in climate-related processes on local, regional, and global levels to ensure that their voices are heard. The COP29 Climate Change Summer Camp invests in educators and youth to foster a generation of active and passionate climate advocates.
